While Waiting for COVID-19 Vaccination, Iranian Resident Volunteers at Clifford Hospital

COVID-19 vaccination services are actively underway at Clifford Hospital, supported by dedicated medical professionals and dozens of community volunteers. Assisting visitors with directions, answering questions, and helping with registration, the volunteers play an important role in ensuring a smooth vaccination experience. Among them is Ali, an Iranian resident in China whose determination to receive a COVID-19 vaccine led him to become one of the hospital's volunteers.

Volunteering While Waiting for COVID-19 Vaccination

Ali's journey to becoming a volunteer began several months earlier. According to Liu Yan, Head Nurse of the Vaccination and Immunization Department, the young Iranian frequently visited the hospital's vaccination clinic in March to ask whether COVID-19 vaccine had become available to foreign nationals. Although he was told that the program had not yet opened to international residents, he continued returning to the hospital to check for updates.

Ali has lived and worked in China in international trade for 11 years and typically returns to Iran once or twice a year. With the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran remaining severe at the time, he hoped to be vaccinated before traveling home. After vaccination appointments became available to foreign nationals, demand was exceptionally high and he was initially unable to secure one. While waiting, he noticed how hard the vaccination team was working and volunteered to assist. His persistence eventually paid off, and he received his vaccination while continuing to serve as a volunteer.

Serving as an Ambassador for Confidence in COVID-19 Vaccination

To support the vaccination program, Ali arranged most of his business activities in the evenings so he could volunteer during the day. Although the hospital already offered multilingual services, his presence helped international vaccine recipients feel more at ease. When asked whether he had been vaccinated and whether Chinese COVID-19 vaccines were reliable, he shared his own positive experience and encouraged others with confidence.

According to Liu Yan, assisting one international vaccine recipient often required considerably more time because of additional procedures such as passport verification and identity documentation. Fluent in Persian, English, and Chinese, Ali became an invaluable volunteer, helping bridge communication between staff and international visitors.

Wang Yinmeng, Director of the Vaccination Department, said the vaccination clinic remained extremely busy, with both healthcare professionals and volunteers working tirelessly. Their shared goal was to ensure every recipient received safe, efficient, and high-quality vaccination services. The hospital continues to welcome local residents, visitors from Hong Kong and Macao, and eligible international residents seeking COVID-19 vaccination services.
